چکیده

We study a single-commodity Robust Network Design problem (RND) in which an undirected graph with edge costs is given together with a discrete set of balance matrices, representing different supply/demand scenarios. In each scenario, a subset of the nodes is exchanging flow. The goal is to determine the minimum cost installation of capacities on the edges such that the flow exchange is feasible for every scenario. Previously conducted computational investigations on the problem motivated the study of the complexity of some special cases and we present complexity results on them, including hypercubes. In turn, these results lead to the definition of new instances (random graphs with { 1,0,1} balances) that are computationally hard for the natural flow formulation. These instances are then solved by means of a new heuristic algorithm for RND, which consists of three phases. In the first phase the graph representing the network is reduced by heuristically deleting a subset of the arcs, and a feasible solution is built. The second phase consists of a neighborhood search on the reduced graph based on a Mixed-Integer (Linear) Programming (MIP) flow model. Finally, the third phase applies a proximity search approach to further improve the solution, taking into account the original graph. The heuristic is tested on the new instances, and the comparison with the solutions obtained by Cplex on a natural flow formulation shows the effectiveness of the proposed method. 2014 Elsevier B.V. ACO-Based Neighborhoods for Fixed-charge Capacitated Multi-commodity Network Design Problem

The fixed-charge Capacitated Multi-commodity Network Design (CMND) is a well-known problem of both practical and theoretical significance. Network design models represent a wide variety of planning and operation management issues in transportation telecommunication, logistics, production and distribution. In this paper, Ant Colony Optimization (ACO) based neighborhoods are proposed for CMND pro...

An Exact Algorithm for Robust Network Design

Modern life heavily relies on communication networks that operate efficiently. A crucial issue for the design of communication networks is robustness with respect to traffic fluctuations, since they often lead to congestion and traffic bottlenecks. In this paper, we address an NP-hard single commodity robust network design problem, where the traffic demands change over time. For k different tim...

A Simulated Annealing Algorithm for Unsplittable Capacitated Network Design

The Network Design Problem (NDP) is one of the important problems in combinatorial optimization. Among the network design problems, the Multicommodity Capacitated Network Design (MCND) problem has numerous applications in transportation, logistics, telecommunication, and production systems. The MCND problems with splittable flow variables are NP-hard, which means they require exponential time t...

The Balanced Wheat Supply Problem and a Heuristic Algorithm

Wheat is a strategic commodity, and so its distribution system is always one of the major issues facing countries. The cost of wheat distribution and storage and the differences in the nutrient content of different wheats, have caused complicated problems in the wheat supply chain. In addition to controlling distribution costs, it could enhance the quality of wheat through blending different ki...

Single-Commodity Stochastic Network Design with Multiple Sources and Sinks

This paper examines the single-commodity stochastic network design problem with multiple sources and sinks. We characterize the structures of the optimal designs and compare with the deterministic counterparts. We do this primarily to understand what constitutes good robust network designs, but hope that the understanding can also be used to develop better heuristic algorithms than those availa...
